The Spanish Armada was organized by King Philip II of Spain and personally led by the Duke of Medina Sedonia in 1588. The battle was the consequence of Englishmen, such as Sir Francis Drake, who actually led the English ships during the battle, raiding Spanish ships and supporting the Dutch Revolt . King Philip then sent this armada to invade England, but this invasion failed catastrophically as he lost most of the fleet at Gravelines and lost more because of strong storms. This naval loss of Spain led further to England's rise to power in the world as the British Empire.
