Pax Romana is a term used for the time around the height of the Roman Empire. Literally Roman Peace, during the Pax Romana within the Empire there was little internal conflict among diverse peoples who had waged war with each other for centuries. However, the Pax Romana was fueled in part by war on the Empire's outer borders, with the barbarian Germanic tribes to the north, and southwestern Asia. Eventually, the era of peace ended and within a few centuries the Western Roman Empire collapsed, thus heralding in the Western European Dark Ages.
