The Gallipoli campaign was a major battle during World War I designed by the Allies to support the Dardanelles Campaign and ultimately defeat Turkey. British and ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) landed on the Gallipoli peninsula on 25 April and suffered heavy casualties within the first few days of the campaign. They ultimately evacuated the peninsula in December 1915. ANZAC Day (which recently celebrated its centenary) is a national holiday in Australia and New Zealand every April 25 to commemorate the disastrous campaign.
