The First Punic War began in 264 BCE after the Romans had finally taken control of the Italian peninsula. The first battle began in a northwestern Sicilian city known as Messana. There were tons of mercenaries in Northern Africa built up by Carthage which were being sent to Sicily to protect and defend Carthaginian land. The Battle of Agrigentum in 261 occurred when in 262, the Romans besieged the city of Agrigentum and held it for a few months before Carthaginian soldiers came. The Romans were besieged by the Carthaginians. Romans claimed victory against Carthage's army and took Agrigentum.
