Byzantium also known as Byzantion was an ancient greek town allegedly founded by Byzas. The colony would later on become Constantinople under the Byzantine Empire, and Istanbul under the Ottoman Empire. During the time of the Byzantine Empire, only the city was referred to as "Byzantium", the name "Byzantine Empire" came into use almost a century after the nation had fallen in 1555 by Hieronymous Wolf. And Yes Byzantium is still in our modern world. It's now been known as Constantinople.
