Bohemia appears to have started its official existence as a sub-unit of the Greater Moravia in the ninth century. Under the Přemysl dynasty, a native monarchy arose to take over after the collapse of Greater Moravia. While Bohemia was fully independent at various times in its history, it spent much of its existence in vassalage to various empires.
